The natural sciences departments of Pomona College operate a total of about fifty Unix workstations and servers. These systems are generally available to students, faculty, and staff of their respective departments. Starting in the summer of 2002, it is possible to get a single unified account which works across all of these systems. This infrastructure is sometimes referred to as the Distributed Computing Initiative, or “DCI.” Therefore, the account you are probably looking for is called a “DCI account.”

Applying for an account

The DCI account application is simple and can found on the web at http://www.dci.pomona.edu/. You will receive an email that tells you what to do next.

DCI clusters

The DCI-enabled systems are divided into administrative groups called “clusters.” Part of the account application process requires you to select which clusters you want to have access to. The clusters currently defined are:

core
All DCI accounts are accepted by the core DCI servers, which include e-mail access and web page hosting.
astro
The ACI advanced computing cluster, including galileo and the workstations in Brackett Observatory. Requires permission from Prof. Penprase.
chem
Silicon Graphics workstations belonging to the chemistry department, including those in the “Advanced Computing Facility” (Seaver N 205). Accounts granted to chemistry faculty, staff, and upper division chemistry students. This cluster now includes the Origin 2000 server that once belonged to the biology department.
cs
The computer science program’s Solaris and Linux servers, including pccs and linus. Required to use the Andrew terminal room (252). Accounts granted to students, faculty, and staff of the computer science program.
math
The math department’s Linux server, outlier.math.pomona.edu, also any Linux workstation(s) in the department. Provides a full LATEX environment which the math department encourages you to use for all your TEX needs. Accounts granted to students, faculty, or staff of the math department.
physics
The Linux workstations in Andrew 158. Accounts granted to any students, faculty, or staff of the physics department.

Getting Help

If you have any questions or problems with your DCI account, you should direct them to me, Michael Dickerson, the Unix systems administrator for all of the natural sciences departments. I can be reached in several ways:
